History of Valentine's Day

Valentine's Chocolate

Happy Valentine's Day!

Valentine's Day is a day celebrated on February 14 by many couples throughout the world. This day, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine or Valentinus. Question is, where does this Valentine's Day comes from? No one really knows the answer, but there are only legends and believes.

Legend #1
Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realising the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, he was to put to death. In contradict, some suggested that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

Legend #2
Valentine actually sent a the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with his jailor's daughter, who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine', and expression that is still in use today.

Last but not least,
